Peoria, my love

select as fave0 0 10:31 pm, July 2, 2007 EDT PetoskeyMy life lives here.

I sat down and decided to write an entry tonight but I feel like I've forgotten how to dictate.  I've been moving so fast this summer that I haven't really played with the thought about getting it down.

I've met such a wide base of people that provide me with something to do every night of the week, both when I get home and at night when people go out.  We have a pool and gorgeous weather, which allows even leisurely activity to be enjoyable.  I haven't traveled but to Chicago for a weekend, where I discovered girls and drink prices that were a bit out of the ordinary.  The Peoria nightlife doesn't seem to suit everyone, but I find everything about it perfect.  We have a city-scape when entering downtown from all angles without the horrendous traffic of a larger city.  We have a water-front along with a lengthy main strip with bars on either side.  This all means of course that I'm not saving money the way I came here to.

I bought my plane ticket for The Netherlands and have gradually picked up details about the trip.  They tell me that 17 people have entered the program and I will be the sole representative of the USA.  That's my favorite fact surrounding the experience, by far.  I leave for this little endeavor August 16th... Six days after my time is up in Peoria.  Hopefully I can get enough of my family in those few days in between... along with saving enough money through the summer to afford more than a cardboard box with minimal furnishings and no silverware.

Caterpillar is still in my blood and my mind.  The company has repeatedly impressed me with the way they treat both their employees and their interns.  They constantly pull us away from our cubicles to fill our minds with happy thoughts regarding how well they will treat us if we return.  I am up for a full-time interview sometime before August and will hopefully leave for Europe with a pleasant offer riding in my pocket.  My supervisor has been adamant about sending me from department to department as though I were at a new buffet and unsure of my pallet.  Today was Marine.  It tasted awesome.

I still compare this summer to my spring in Italy, mostly in view of the great people that I've found.  We don't travel far, but we do it right everyday and every weekend.  I'm looking forward to seeing the fireworks of Peoria as they pop and fizzle above the buildings of downtown and float into the river.  I don't have a lady to hold onto, but the memories will be less painful this way.  I will miss this place when I leave... all the more reason to return.
