Surat, they city of Diamond and Textile is supposed to be derived its name from Suryapur or Khubsoorat. The city Surat which is also administrative headquarters of the district Surat, Gujarat is the Eighth largest city in India and second largest city in Gujarat after Ahmedabad. If we look the city as population-wise, its 7th most populous city in India and 49th in World.

 

The city Surat is situated on the both side of river Tapi, 14 miles from its mouth. Surat is primarily known for its two businesses, diamond and textile. The city has acquired sobriquet as Diamond city of Indian and silk city of India because of these two businesses. 9 out of 10 diamonds are cut and polished in  Surat only. If you enter the city you can see everywhere neat and clean. And the city is third cleanest city of India after after Chandigarh & Gandhinagar. According to UN report Surat is the fastes growing city in the world and according to 2008 figure the city has highest Gross Domestic Product growth rates in India at 11.5%. Once this textile city was chief port of India in the time of the Mughal reign, But during British Raaj  Surat lost its sheen to Bombay and Bombay became chief port of India.

 

Surat History :   The name of  Surat also is mentioned in famous Hindu epic Mahabharata. Lord Krishna stopped in Surat while going from Mathura to Dwarka. Acccording to local lore Surat was founded in 15th centaury by a famous Hindu trader called Gopi . And he called it Suryapur. In fifteen thirteen  a famous  Portuguese traveller, Duarte Barbosa, mentioned  Surat as an important seaport, frequented by many ships from Malabar and  several  parts of the world. And its believed by fifteen twenty then city got its name Surat.

 

Surat Economy :  As mentioned above two major business, Diamond and Textile industries  of the city made not only popular in home country but also all over the world. While Surat is mainly known in India for its  textile business because large part of textile needs of India  is met by Surat. The ubiquitous Surat saree can be seen even in smallest village of India. Main products of Textile of Surat are rayon and polyester based.  And the textile products are not exported to western countries but main markets of export are gulf countries.

At the other hand Surat has made its outstanding   name all over the world.  Large part of diamond is polished in Surat. Its interesting that surat itself does not produce any iota of Diamond.

Surat Transport :  Chief source of transport  of Surat remains Auto Rickshaw. Though with much hype city bus was launched but auto rickshaw still is favorite means of transport. Because Surati’s don’t want to waste time by waiting for buses. Surat Airport is also operational from last two years though with limited destinations flights. Suat airport I situated on Dumas Parlepoint road.

Surat Education :  Main  medium of  teaching of schools of Surat. Though large number of English schools is   coming up and more and more parents are now sending their children to English medium schools. There are also several colleges which are affiliated to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University.
